The Garmin Descent G1 is a full-featured dive computer built into a 45mm smartwatch, running Bühlmann ZHL-16C with user-configurable Gradient Factors — the same algorithm used in serious technical computers, accessible to recreational divers who want precise control over conservatism. It covers six dive modes: scuba (single and multi-gas including trimix), gauge, apnea, apnea hunt, and CCR, depth-rated to 100m with a sapphire lens and leakproof inductive buttons. Battery lasts up to 25 hours in dive mode and 21 days in smartwatch mode. Not air-integrated, but logs up to 200 dives and syncs to the Garmin Dive app. For Malaysian divers doing multi-day liveaboards in Sipadan or Layang-Layang, the long battery life and rugged build make this a computer you never have to babysit.

Gurjit Singh –
Can I change the battery myself, or does it need to be serviced by Garmin? Don’t want to risk water damage.
Junhao Lo –
Hi Gurjit, thank you for reaching out! The G1 has a rechargeable battery rather than a user-replaceable one. For safety and to maintain water resistance, any battery servicing should be done by a Garmin service centre. If you have concerns about the battery, we recommend contacting our support for assistance.
Wei Ming Tan –
Does the Descent G1 work with both RGBM and Bühlmann algorithms, or must I choose one before the dive? Can I switch mid-dive if needed?
[email protected] –
Hi Wei Ming, thanks for your question! The Descent G1 does allow you to choose either RGBM or Bühlmann algorithms, but you set this before your dive via the settings. It’s not possible to switch algorithms during a dive, for safety and accuracy reasons. Please make your preferred selection before you enter the water.
Fazli Rahman –
I used this on a recent trip to Tioman, and the display is very clear underwater. However, the strap felt a bit stiff when I wore it over my wetsuit. Overall happy, just wish the strap was softer.
Junhao Lo –
Hi Fazli, thank you for your honest feedback! Great to hear the display performed well. We understand comfort is important, especially over a wetsuit. If the strap continues to feel stiff, you might want to try softening it with warm water or consider alternative Garmin-compatible straps for a better fit. Safe diving!
