Surface Tension is a Taiwanese dive brand that designs back-inflate BCDs with two deliberate priorities: compact packability for travel diving and a colour range that goes significantly beyond the all-black standard of conventional dive equipment. The brand emerged from Taiwan's recreational diving community and reflects what Asian recreational divers specifically want from a BCD in terms of fit, travel practicality, and aesthetics.

A back-inflate BCD places the buoyancy bladder behind the diver rather than wrapping around the torso like a jacket. This positions the diver naturally horizontal in the water - the neutral trim position that minimises drag during finning and reduces the accidental downward fin sweeps that damage coral at sites like Sipadan and Semporna. Jacket BCDs push buoyancy forward, producing a head-up float angle that requires constant active correction.

Surface Tension produces their BCDs in seasonal palettes rather than a fixed permanent range. Coral, teal, forest green, slate blue, and two-tone combinations have featured across their catalogue - colour options that make personal kit identification straightforward during multi-diver boat loading and that perform well on camera for divers who document their dives.

Surface Tension BCDs are engineered with the reality of budget airline luggage allowances in mind. The back-inflate design folds flat without the front panel bulk of jacket BCDs, and the packed weight is substantially lower than full-featured recreational jackets. For divers flying between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, or Kuala Terengganu for dive trips, every kilogram saved on the BCD creates room for other equipment.

Surface Tension sizes their BCDs using Asian body proportions as the design reference, producing smaller torso lengths and narrower shoulder spacings than international brands sized primarily for European and North American bodies. Smaller frame divers who find international BCD shoulder straps sitting off the shoulder or bladder position riding too high typically find Surface Tension sizing more anatomically correct.

Back-inflate BCDs require slightly more buoyancy familiarity than jacket BCDs at the surface - the diver floats face-down rather than in the head-up position that jacket BCDs produce naturally.
