What is Dive Alert and what problem does it solve?
Dive Alert produces audible signalling devices that mount on a BCD inflator hose and emit a powerful horn sound using BCD air when triggered at the surface. A diver surfacing in boat traffic - during a drift dive, after separating from the group, or in conditions where visual signals are obscured - needs a way to make their presence known immediately. Hand waving and inflated SMBs are visual signals that require the boat crew to be looking in the right direction. An audible signal works regardless of where the crew is looking.
How does a Dive Alert attach to a BCD?
The Dive Alert replaces or attaches alongside the standard BCD inflator mechanism on the low-pressure hose. No tools are required for installation on most BCD configurations - the device is hand-tightened onto the LP inflator connection. When the trigger is pressed at the surface, it diverts a burst of air from the BCD supply through the horn mechanism, producing a signal audible over wave noise and outboard engine sounds.
How loud is the Dive Alert signal?
Dive Alert devices produce signals in the range of 115-120 decibels at one metre - comparable to a car horn. This output level is audible at distances of several hundred metres across open water in calm conditions, and penetrates the masking noise of wave action and diesel boat engines that make human shouting ineffective at surface-to-boat distances. Does a Dive Alert add meaningful bulk to a dive kit?
