Dive roller bags have padded internal sleeves or removable compartments designed around BCD and regulator shapes, reinforced base corners that survive cargo handling, exterior hose ports or tank valve cutouts on some models, and corrosion-resistant hardware throughout. Standard suitcases lack these features and their interiors are not shaped for fins or cylindrical equipment.

Regulators should be stored in their own pouch or wrapped securely before placing in a roller bag. The second stage and SPG are the most vulnerable points. Coil the hoses naturally u2014 never force them into tight bends u2014 and pad the first stage with a neoprene sleeve. If checking a bag on a flight, a rigid-shell roller bag offers more crush protection than a soft-sided design.

Mares Cruise Roller bags, Cressi Piovra, Scubapro Caravan, and Aqua Lung Cargo Bags are commonly seen on liveaboards departing from Kota Kinabalu. Locally available brands like Tusa also appear. At Semporna jetties, where bags are loaded and offloaded multiple times over a week-long trip, abrasion resistance and heavy-duty zips are the deciding factors more than brand.

Pack fins and the BCD bladder (deflated and folded) at the base near the wheels u2014 these act as a buffer. Lay the wetsuit flat over them. The regulator set in its pouch goes on top, cushioned from the zipper side. Masks should be in their hard case and packed in the centre surrounded by soft fabric. Avoid placing anything on top of the regulator console without padding.

Yes u2014 use TSA-approved combination locks on bags travelling through airports that use TSA scanning protocols. Malaysia's KLIA, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu airports use their own security procedures and do not cut TSA locks, so any combination or keyed lock works domestically. On international routes to Australia or the USA, TSA locks are strongly advisable to prevent forced entry.
