Suunto

Suunto is a Finnish company founded in 1936, originally producing compasses for military and orienteering use. The precision instrument heritage carried directly into dive computer development when Suunto entered the market in the 1980s - the brand's first dive computers were built on the same accuracy standards as their navigation instruments. Suunto has manufactured dive computers continuously since then, accumulating algorithm refinement across four decades of real-world dive data.

Suunto computers use the Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM), developed in collaboration with Dr. Bruce Wienke. RGBM models both dissolved gas and bubble formation during ascent, producing conservatism that increases appropriately on successive diving days as bubble loading accumulates - particularly relevant to multi-day Malaysian dive trips where four or more dives per day over a week is common at Mabul and Sipadan liveaboards.

The D5 is a full-colour recreational dive computer with Bluetooth dive log upload, wireless air integration capability, and a display designed for legibility at recreational depths in bright tropical water. It suits recreational divers who want complete dive data - depth, time, no-deco limits, tank pressure - in a clean, easily navigated interface without managing a technical computer's complexity.

A wireless pressure transmitter screws into the high-pressure port of the regulator first stage and broadcasts tank pressure throughout the dive. Compatible Suunto computers display current tank pressure and a calculated remaining dive time based on your actual surface air consumption rate at the current depth. The calculation updates in real time as consumption changes with depth and exertion level.

Suunto computers that use the Suunto App sync dive profiles to the Suunto cloud after each dive. Losing or replacing the computer does not delete the dive log history - all synced dives remain accessible in the app. The app also stores the dive plan and algorithm state between dives, maintaining the multi-day dive history used by the RGBM algorithm for accurate no-deco limit calculation on successive days.

The Suunto EON Steel Black supports up to five gas mixes, full decompression management, and trimix use - covering the full range from recreational nitrox diving to air decompression diving to trimix technical diving. The steel construction produces a heavier, more robust instrument than the D-series recreational line.
